Trainings & Events
Urban PRIDE Dudley Library Trainings Urban PRIDE will be hosting a series of trainings on a monthly basis for parents of children with special needs at the Dudley Library this school year. Topics will include a basic introduction to Special Education, Understanding Your Child’s Individualized Education Plan, among other things. We are also open to parents suggesting what topics they would like to know more about for future meetings. For dates scheduled, see the events calendar.
The Race, Culture Identity and Achievement Seminar Series brings nationally recognized scholars, new research, and models of exemplary practice to the Boston community, seeking to create a location for educators, parents, community leaders, students, and researchers to examine how race, culture, and identity are implicated in the school performance of students of color.
This year, the lecturers include two scholars who have amassed a body of research on what it takes to effectively educate Black and Latino students. Classroom teachers will continue to expand our understanding of what outstanding teaching looks like and requires. Two scholar/union leaders, from what is arguably the leading progressive teachers union in the country, will discuss the role of teachers unions in raising the achievement of students of color. The lectures will examine effective literacy practices for Black adolescent boys and discuss research-based literacy practices for middle school English language learners. Also speaking will be students who have been demanding quality education as a civil right; and a scholar who will contextualize the students’
activism as well as a teacher who will talk about the support students need when demanding quality education.
The Series promises to be challenging, provocative and an opportunity to continue learning together.
